From Metadata to Meaning

How does metadata create meaning in research? The HMC Conference 2027, taking place 10–12 March 2027 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, invites you to explore how metadata provides the context that makes research data understandable, connected, and reusable by both people and machines.

Under the theme “From Metadata to Meaning”, the conference brings together perspectives from across the research landscape. Researchers, data stewards, developers, and research infrastructure providers and operators will exchange ideas, showcase solutions, and discuss how metadata enables interpretation, interoperability, and trustworthy reuse across disciplines and infrastructures.

From semantic standards and metadata quality to research workflows, AI-ready data, and sustainable infrastructures, the conference will explore how well-designed metadata turns isolated information into meaningful connections. It creates the context needed to discover, interpret, combine, and reuse research data – and increasingly to make it accessible to machine-driven methods and autonomous systems.

Whether you develop research infrastructures, manage data, build tools and services, or conduct scientific research, HMC Conference 2027 offers a place to share experiences, discover new approaches, and connect with a growing interdisciplinary metadata community.

Join the conference in Karlsruhe and explore how we can move from metadata to meaning – together.
